Patterns of Fu Gu ("Returning to the Ancient") in Chinese Art
Wu Hung
University of Chicago

In Chinese art history, the idea of fu gu has been most closely linked to theories and styles in painting. But recent studies of bronzes, ceramics, architecture, print culture, religious art, and fashion demonstrate the recurrent phenomena of fu gu in all these areas and beyond. This paper explores the conditions and implications of these phenomena. The recurrent patterns that emerge from this discussion will lead to a redefinition of gu not only as an aesthetic taste and art style, but also as a persistent mechanism in Chinese visual culture that connects form with specific social, political, and cultural events.
